Measuring
Box size always refers to the inner dimensions and appear in the order
of length, width, and depth. Box length refers to the longest side of the opening, width
refers to the shortest, and depth to the distance between where the box
opens. Pad dimensions always appear in the order of width and length, where
width is the direction of corrugation.
Flutes
Flute refers to the profile of the corrugated medium. 'C' flute is the most common, followed by 'B', with both being readily available and carrying the same cost. 'BC' is the combination of 'B' and 'C' and is commonly referred to as doublewall. 'BC' is readily available and is typically used for packaging that has material requirements beyond what 'C' or 'B' (singlewall) can provide. 'E' flute is also readily available, but carries a higher minimum quantity and cost than 'C' or 'B'. 'E' flute is ideal for smaller packaging and has a superior printing surface.
ECT vs. Mullen
Edge Crush Test (ECT) is a high performance board developed as a less expensive alternative to Mullen in cases where the primary concern is centered on stacking strength.
One popular myth about ECT is that it is made from 100% recycled OCC (Old Corrugated Containers) and is therefore not as reliable as Mullen. The truth is that both ECT and Mullen contain on average 43% OCC. The real differences between ECT and Mullen is that Mullen's paper fibers are crossed as opposed to ECT where the paper fibers are aligned. These aligned fibers give ECT a similar stacking strength to Mullen at a lighter basis weight, but at the cost of bursting strength. The table below is a convenient weight and size guide for both ECT and Mullen. Have questions? Contact us.
